Review: The Strokes- ‘Comedown Machine’

The Strokes’ fifth studio release officially drops tomorrow to much anticipation from any of us who have followed the band for the past 12 or so years. While there has always been the argument of whether The Strokes were geniuses here to save Rock & Roll or simply rich-kid posers doing their best impressions of gritty underground rockers. I’ve thought the former since the age of 14 and I’ve been hoping they would live up to that promise ever since then.

While many of us have been craving the next “Classic Strokes” album since Room On Fire dropped in ’05, the New York band appears to prefer to go in a completely different direction with their latest release. The Strokes adopted a style they hinted at with their last album, leaving many fans torn between those being reluctant to accepting the new sound and those going along with the change and assessing it for what it is, rather than comparing it with previous releases.

The Strokes- “Fast Animals” (B-Side to “All The Time”)

On the eve of the release of their latest album, Comedown Machine, the B-Side for the Strokes’ single “All The Time” has surfaced. The track, “Fast Animals” will be part of the special 7-inch Record Store Day release. As heard on most of the tracks on the new album, “Fast Animals” features a very synth-y production.

Video: The Strokes – “All The Time”

The Strokes have released their official video for their first single, “All The Time,” from their forthcoming Comedown Machine. The New Yorkers kept it simple by making a collage of multiple shots of live performances and behind the scenes clips from the past and present eras of the group.

The Strokes- “All The Time”

As The Strokes had noted in their fan newsletter the first single from their forthcoming album, Comedown Machine, is now available. The new song, titled “All The Time,” takes us away from the synth, A-Ha-like sound heard on “One Way Trigger” (I still dug it) and instead takes us back to the gritty garage sound heard in their earliest work. It sounds like a good step in the right direction for what fans may be in store for with the new album.
